40th Anniversary Rhode´s Women - September, 2017Panel on Sustainability and Climate Change - September 15, 2017.One of the activities at the 40th Rhodes Women anniversary, following the theme of Rhodes Women Standing Up for the World, was a panel on Sustainability and Climate Change"". This article provides a review of the panel participants and a link to the video of this interactive session.The speakers and moderator of the panel were:Moderator: Hila Levy, Colorado & Exeter, 2008. Hila is studying for her D.Phil. in Zoology, researching the diseases and population genetics of several penguin species in the Antarctic. While serving as a U.S. Air Force intelligence officer, she obtained an M.S. in Environmental Planning and Management from John Hopkins University prior to starting her doctoral work at Oxford. Panel Member: Jennifer Haverkamp, Ohio & Somerville, 1979.Jennifer recently concluded her service as the Obama Administration´s Ambassador and Special Representative for the Environment and Water Resources in the U.S. Department of State. In 2016, she led successful negotiations of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol to reduce use of hydrofluorocarbons and the International Civil Aviation Organization´s agreement to control global greenhouse emissions from International Flights. She previously directed the Environmental Defense Fund´s International Climate Program and spent nearly a decade as the Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Environment and Natural Resources in the Executive Office of the President. She has held posts at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of Justice, the Conservation Foundation, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, George Washington Law School and John Hopkins graduate school and has served on the boards of the Verified Carbon Standard Association and the American Bird Conservancy as well as USTR´s Trade and Environmental Policy Advisory Committee.Panel Member: Charalee Graydon, Prairies & Wadham, 1982.Charalee is an academic, writer, journalist and past lawyer. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and Political Science and a Juris Doctorate in Law from Alberta, Canada as well as a B.C.L. graduate law degree from Oxford. She has held academic posts in Wales, Alberta and New Zealand and is presently a faculty member at EUCLID University. While in Canada she practiced law in Alberta and British Columbia. She has published academic works on Environmental Management Systems, Sentencing Environmental Offences, and mediation and collaborative dispute resolution. Charalee has developed programs for students, judges and corporations on environmental issues.Panel Member: Sarah Bronin, Texas & Magdalen, 2001. Sarah is a Mexican-American author, professor, attorney and architect. An endowed chair in real property at UConn Law School, she also serves as the faculty director for the UConn Center for Energy and Environmental Law. She has written several articles and books, focusing on sustainability, renewable energy, and historical preservation law. Along with other public service positions, she chairs the award-winning efforts of the city of Hartford, Connecticut, regarding sustainability, climate change, urban planning, and zoning. Sarah is a licensed architect and has won awards for the design and rehabilitation of her downtown Hartford brownstone. She also helps lead a statewide historic preservation organization.Panel Member: Clarke Knight, Nevada & Wolfson, Nevada, 2014. Clare holds a B.A. in Chemistry from Smith College and recently obtained a MSc in Water Policy and a MSc in Biodiversity from the University of Oxford. She is currently a PhD student at UC Berkley in the Environmental Science, Policy and Management department. She conducts research on California forest ecosystems, specifically the ecology and management of carbon as part of a major initiative to bolster the science supporting California´s climate legislation.
